PARABLES OF JESUS – Trim The Lamp
Matthew 25:5-7
" 'But while the bridegroom was delayed, they all slumbered and slept. And at midnight a cry was heard: "Behold, the bridegroom is coming; go out to meet him." Then all those virgins arose and trimmed their lamps.' "
The first time I remember seeing a lamp trimmed was in 1953. Our family had taken a vacation trip to the midwest to visit relatives. One stop was a Uncle Carl and Aunt Bertha's farm home in North Dakota. That area did not yet have electricity to provide light, so just before dark, Aunt Bertha told my cousins to trim the lamps. They began the daily process by cleaning the chimney of the lamp that was dirty with soot from the night before. Next, they raised the wick and cut off the top part that was burned so there was new wick. Lastly, they filled the well with fresh kerosene. A part of my Christian life should be to trim my lamp. I need to daily clean the soot that collects from living in a dirty world. I need to cut off the part that would hinder the flame from burning brightly. And I need to keep the well filled with the oil of the Spirit. This little light of mine – I'm gonna let it shine.
TODAY'S THOUGHT: Attention needs to be given so the lamp burns brightly.
Have a "trimmed" day. Love you.
