IS THERE A PROBLEM HERE?
Genesis 42:1-2, 5
"When Jacob saw that there was grain in Egypt, Jacob said to his sons, 'Why do you look at one another?' And he said, 'Indeed, I have heard that there is grain in Egypt; go down to that place and buy for us there, that we may live and not die' .... And the sons of Israel went to buy grain among those who journeyed, for the famine was in the land of Canaan."
Jacob and his sons all recognized their need for food during this famine. I take the phrase, "Why do you look at one another?" to mean that the boys were asking each other, "What shall we do?"
The first step to solving a problem is to recognize that there is a problem. I will not act to meet a need until I am aware that there is a need. I will not seek food unless I am hungry. It is like the Laodiceans who said to themselves, "I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing," but did not know that they were "wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked" (Revelation 3:17). People will not seek a Savior unless they know that they are lost. They will not feel the need to repent until they are convinced that they are sinners. Jesus said to the Laodiceans, "I counsel you to buy from Me...." (Revelation 3:18). I know what I am – a sinner – and I need Jesus, whatever the cost.
TODAY'S PRINCIPLE: The first step to satisfying a need is to recognize the need.
