DAD'S RAMBLINGS -- MEPHIBOSHETH

 MEPHIBOSHETH
II Samuel 9:2a, 3, 5-7, 13

"And there was a servant of the house of Saul whose name was Ziba .... Then the king said, 'Is there not still someone of the house of Saul, to whom I can show the kindness of God?' And Ziba said to the king, 'There is still a son of Jonathan, who is lame in his feet.' .... Then the king sent and brought him out of the house of Machir the son of Ammiel, from Lo Debar. Now when Mephibosheth the son of Jonathan, the son of Saul, had come to David, he fell on his face and prostrated himself. Then David said, 'Mephibosheth?' And he answered, 'Here is your servant!' So David said to him, 'Do not fear, for I will surely show you kindness for Jonathan your father's sake, and will restore to you all the land of Saul your grandfather; and you shall eat bread at my table continually.' .... So Mephibosheth dwelt in Jerusalem, for he ate continually at the king's table. And he was lame in both his feet."

What a wonderful story. It is one of my favorites in all the Bible because it is a picture of God's love to me. The story begins back in the early days of King David's reign over Judah, when Saul and Jonathan were killed in battle. The nursemaid of Jonathan's son, Mephibosheth who was only five years old, fled in fear because she thought Mephibosheth would also be killed. As they ran, Mephibosheth fell and broke his legs, becoming lame for the rest of his life (II Samuel 4:4). But King David sought out Mephibosheth, the son of his enemy, because of his love for Jonathan and the covenant they had made. What a picture of God's love for me. I was damaged by the Fall – lame, a child of His enemy, with nothing to offer, separated from God by my sin. But God, by the Holy Spirit, sought me out and brought me to the King for the sake of Jesus. When I fell on my face before God, He invited me to eat at His table as a part of His household. How marvelous that God would accept me, broken and lame as I am. Oh, what a wonderful God!!!

TODAY'S PRINCIPLE: God seeks out lame and damaged people and brings them to Himself for the sake of Jesus, to make them a part of his household.

Have an accepted day. Love you.
