UNDER AUTHORITY
Matthew 8:8-9
"The centurion answered and said, 'Lord, I am not worthy that you should come under my roof. But only speak a word and my servant will be healed. For I also am a man under authority, having soldiers under me. And I say to this one, "Go," and he goes; and to another, "Come," and he comes; and to my servant, "Do this," and he does it.' "
As a military man, this Roman centurion man understood the discipline of authority. He himself was under authority, and he had others under his authority. He recognized that Jesus had authority that was great than his. Most humans, because of their independent spirits, rebel against authority. "Don't tell me what to do!" But the wise person understands that authority structure is necessary to maintain order in society, whether parents, police, teachers, or managers in the work place. Without this order, we would have complete chaos. God has put authority in place so we can live in peace. To rebel against authority is to rebel against God. That's why He says, "Obey those who rule over you" (Hebrews 13:17). And again, "Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For this is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exists are appointed by God. Therefore whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist bring judgment on themselves" (Romans 13:1-2). Not only am I called to honor the civil authorities, but I am also called to submit to the Lordship of Jesus. Obeying His laws brings order and peace into my life. Disobedience brings confusion and chaos.
TODAY'S PRINCIPLE: God has ordained authority structures in society to maintain order and peace.
