Dad's Ramblings -- Keep Focused

"Let your eyes look straight ahead and your eyelids look right before you.  Ponder the path of your feet, and let all your ways be established.  Do not turn to the right or the left;  remove your feet from evil."

                                             Proverbs 4:25-27

James Dobson calls it "the straight life."  It reminds me of work horses with blinders on to keep them from being distracted or enticed to turn from the prescribed path.  It must be boring for the horse to plod along the dusty trail when there are such green pastures to romp in.  Satan loves to get God's people distracted from the paths of righteousness.  Sin can be so very alluring.  The solution is to keep my eyes on Jesus.

Today's Thought:  Eyes focused on Jesus will not stray into the paths of sin.

Have a focused day.  Love you.

Dad's Ramblings -- Wisdom of the Heart

"My son, give attention to my words; incline your ear to my sayings. Do not let them depart from your eyes; keep them in the midst of your heart...Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life."

                                       Proverbs 4:20-21, 23

I often use the phrase, "Guard your heart," because life springs from the heart. Wisdom is not just an intellectual exercise, but it is a way of living that flows out of the deep recesses of our being. (This is called "worldview.) When I was a kid, the house across the street had a spring with cold water that we would drink from on hot summer days. Sometimes we would not drink from the spring because there was junk floating in the water. If the well of our heart becomes contaminated with worldly wisdom, it will affect the way we live.

Today's Thought: Godly wisdom is a well-spring that flows out of our hearts.

Have a "heart" day. Love you.

Dad's Ramblings -- Stumbling In Darkness

"But the path of the just is like the shining sun, that shines ever brighter unto the perfect day. The way of the wicked is like darkness; they do not know what makes them stumble."

                                                 Proverbs 4:18-19

Godly people shine like lights, but the darkness does not comprehend it (see John 1:5, referring to Jesus). Ungodly people have no clue about sin and its effects, so they don't know how to solve the problems generated by sin. They try various tactics to counteract sin, but the human measures don't work. So they just keep stumbling around. In fact, they think godly people are weird, and that sin is natural. But the proof is in the puddin'. Godly answers to sin, such as Teen Challenge, have such a higher success rate than secular programs. And that's why the people in Washington, D.C., stumble around. They walk in darkness, not understanding God's ways. Righteous people see sin for what it is and have the answers to solve the problems. We get to shine as the sun in the darkness.

Today's Thought: People stumble in darkness because they reject light.

Have a bright day. Love you.

Dad's Ramblings -- Get Wisdom

"Hear, my children, the instruction of a father, and give attention to know understanding; for I will give you good doctrine: Do not forsake my law .... 'Wisdom is the principle thing; therefore get wisdom. And in all your getting, get understanding.' "

                                                Proverbs 4:1-2, 7

The most important thing a person can pursue in life is not fame and fortune, but getting to know the Father's heart and then following. Wisdom could be defined as seeing things from the Father's perspective. Getting wisdom is not always easy because it requires effort, and often goes against human understanding. Get to know and obey His word, for it will preserve and keep (vs. 6).

Today's Thought: Getting Wisdom is the most important thing in life.

Have a "getting" day. Love you.

Dad's Ramblings -- The Rewards Of The Godly

"Do not envy the oppressor, and choose none of his ways, for the perverse person is an abomination to the LORD, but His secret counsel is with the upright. The curse of the LORD is on the house of the wicked, but He blesses the home of the just. Surely He scorns the scornful, but gives grace to the humble. The wise shall inherit glory, but shame shall be the legacy of fools."

                                       Proverbs 3:31-35

There is a stark contrast between the ungodly and godly –

         Perverse — Upright
         Wicked   — Just
         Scornful  — Humble
         Fools      — Wise

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to decide which one God is going to bless. I choose godliness as my legacy.

Today's Thought: The price of ungodliness is not worth the price.

Have a godly day. Love you.

Dad's Ramblings -- A Time To Fight

"Do not strive with a man without cause, if he has done you no harm."\

                                            Proverbs 3:30

There is a time to stand and fight. But why would anyone fight with another person who caused him no harm? One reason is that some people are simply contentious. They just like to keep an argument going. But in my case, it is my pride. I don't like my ego or integrity being attacked. So I fight back. And for what? Not to protect God's truth, but simply to defend my honor. Jesus strove with the religious leaders because of eternal truth, but never to defend his own personhood. I really need to work of this area of my life.

Today's Thought: Fights need to be chosen carefully in the light of truth.

Have a peaceful day. Love you.

Dad's Ramblings -- Debt-free (Almost)

"Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in the power of your hand to do so. Do not say to your neighbor, 'Go and come back, and tomorrow I will give it,' when you have it with you."

                                             Proverbs 3:27-28

The moral is: "Keep short accounts." The best is to not go into debt at all. But when it is necessary, pay it back quickly. A guaranteed way to destroy relationships is to borrow money from friends or relatives. There is peace and freedom in being debt-free.

Today's Thought: Owe no man anything except to love one another (Romans 13:8).

Have a debt-free day. Love you.

Dad's Ramblings -- Confidence In God

"Do not be afraid of sudden terror, nor of trouble from the wicked when it comes; for the LORD will be your confidence, and will keep your foot from being caught."

                                          Proverbs 3:25-26

Verses 13-24 speak of the value and preciousness of wisdom (doing things God's way) – long life, honor, pleasantness, and peace. But verses 25-26 really speak to me today. We can have confidence in God even in the perilous times we live in. There are some truly wicked people in our government who are subverting God's way and imposing their evil agenda on us. But in the dark times, I can have confidence that nothing is outside of God's control. He, who founded the earth and established the heavens (vs. 19), is still in control. I can rest in Him.

Today's Thought: We can live without fear because of our confidence in God.

Have a confident day. Love you.

Dad's Ramblings -- Correction

"My son, do not despise the chastening of the LORD, nor despise His correction; for whom the LORD loves He corrects, just as a father the son in whom he delights."

                                            Proverbs 3:11-12

"This hurts me more than it hurts you!" Yeah, right!!!! I doubt that any child says to himself when he is corrected, "Dad sure must love me because he is so mean to me." It is no fun to be corrected or disciplined. But in reality, the father who doesn't care about his children will let them do whatever they please – even if it destroys them. But when a parent, spouse, or friend tells me I am wrong, it means they really care about me. It is an act of love, even if it hurts. "Now no chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it" (Hebrews 12:11). Ouch!!

Today's Thought: Discipline is an expression of love and the wise person accepts it.

Have a correctable day. Love you.

Dad's Ramblings -- Honoring God

"Honor the LORD with your possessions, and with the firstfruits of all your increase. So your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will overflow with new wine."

                                             Proverbs 3:9-10

The rewards of giving offerings to God of my money and possessions are only a small part of the reason for giving. The greater reason is that my offerings demonstrate how much I honor Him in my life. If I give McDonalds more than I give God, then McDonalds is more important to me. God is a higher priority in my life than things. He deserves more than left-overs.  It is a wise person who recognizes that he owes God everything.

Today's Thought: God will bless those who honor Him with their possessions.

Have a giving day. Love you.

Dad's Ramblings -- Health and Strength

"Do no be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and depart from evil. It will be health to your flesh, and strength to your bones."

                                                Proverbs 3:7-8

The margin reading for "flesh" is "naval." My belly-button is not a thing of beauty, but it is a continual reminder that at one point I was totally dependent on someone other than myself for my very existence. Fear of the LORD brings me to that reality – I need God. He is my source of health and strength -- my very life.  Ego, conceit, flesh, and pride – these are all enemies of my spiritual health. They make me wise in my own sight. Remember – the middle letter of pride and sin is "I."

Today's Thought: Fear of God gives a proper perspective of my own self.

Have a healthy day. Love you.

Dad's Ramblings -- In God We Trust

"Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths."

                                                 Proverbs 3:5-6

"In God we trust" is more than just a motto on a penny. It is a way of life. Can I really trust God when things go to pot? If my life belongs to Him, I can know that He is directing my paths, even in the bad times. There are a lot of things I don't understand with my human intellect. But I can trust that God knows. This is the secret to living without fear. As the old saying goes, "Why should I let worry keep me from sleep when God is awake. There's no sense both of us losing sleep." When life doesn't make sense to my own understanding, all I can do is trust Him.

Today's Thought: Trusting the LORD is the antidote to worry.

Have a trusting day. Love you.

Dad's Ramblings -- The Heart of Wisdom

"Let not mercy and truth forsake you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart, and so find favor and high esteem in the sight of God and man."

                                                    Proverbs 3:3-4

Mercy and truth are more than accouterments added like jewelry to our lives just to look good. They are an integral part of the wise person's inner being that is demonstrated through his character. Jesus was full of grace and truth (John 1:14), and He increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men (Luke 2:52). My desire is to grow in God's wisdom, not as some external jewelry, but in the very fabric of my being.

Today's Thought: Mercy and truth are written on the heart of the wise man.

Have a growing day. Love you.

Dad's Ramblings -- "Do I Gotta?"

"My son, do not forget my law, but let your heart keep my commands; for length of days and long life and peace they will add to you."

                                               Proverbs 3:1-2

"Do I gotta do it?" When I was a kid and my mom and dad told me to do something that I didn't want to do, I got angry. There was no peace in my heart when I obeyed since I did it only because they were the boss, not because I wanted to. When I do what is right because I "gotta," there is no joy or peace. But obeying God from the heart brings peace.

Today's Thought: Peace belongs to those who do what is right from the heart.

Have a peaceful day. Love you.

Dad's Ramblings -- Just Say No!

"Discretion will preserve you...to deliver you from the immoral woman, from the seductress who flatters with her words, who forsakes the companion of her youth, and forgets the covenant of her God."

                                              Proverbs 2:11, 16-17

What does the seductess say?  "Go ahead and have a little fun -- no one will know."  "You deserve more than this."  "Just once won't hurt."  "Be happy -- enjoy life."  "Divorce will make me happy."  Ad infinitum, ad naseum.  Eve heard the voice of the seductress and was deceived into believing it (I Tim. 2:14).  Did it bring her happiness?  I, too, have heard the voice of the tempter enticing me to partake of forbidden fruit.  But discretion involves a plan (see Ramblings for Prov. 2:11-13).  The plan is to purpose in my heart to say "No" and flee youthful lusts just as Joseph did, and to remember the covenant I made with my God.

Today's Thought:  When enticed by the seductress to forsake God's way, the plan is to "Just Say No!".

Have a purposeful day.   Love you.

Dad's Ramblings -- The Deception of Sin

"Discretion will preserve you; understanding will keep you, to deliver you from the way of evil...from those who leave the paths of uprightness to walk in the way of darkness."

                                                  Proverbs 2:11-13

Sin is deceptive. It looks like light but is really darkness. It can seem so beautiful and attractive, but it rejoices in evil, it delights in perversity, its ways are crooked and devious (vss. 14-15) and eventually leads to death (vs. 18). It is like Las Vegas. The flashing neon lights are most beautiful at night. Those who are enticed by the glitter walk into darkness. The light of day exposes sin for what it is. This is discretion and understanding (wisdom) at work: to see past the glitz to what sin really is – ugly and destructive.

Today's Thought: Wisdom understands that no matter how glamourous sin is, it is still darkness.

Have a sun-filled day. Love you.

Dad's Ramblings -- Pleasant To The Soul

"When wisdom enters your heart, and knowledge is pleasant to your soul......"

                                               Proverbs 2:10

If God's wisdom is a treasure (2:1) and is pleasant to the soul, why is it not a higher priority in our lives? It would seem that people would want to avoid wrong decisions by seeking God's wisdom. Yet we blunder through life doing what is right in our own eyes (Judges 21:25) based on our own feelings, reasoning, and cultural norms, bringing pain to ourselves and others. God's way is pleasant to the soul.

Today's Thought: God's knowledge is pleasant to the soul.

Have a pleasant day. Love you.

Dad's Ramblings -- Revelation Wisdom

"For the LORD gives wisdom; from His mouth comes knowledge and understanding. He stores up sound wisdom for the upright; He is a shield to those who walk uprightly; He guards the paths of justice, and preserves the way of His saints. Then you will understand righteousness and justice, equity and every good path."

                                              Proverbs 2:6-9

It is as simple as this: Wisdom comes by revelation from God. Anyone who does not acknowledge God can never have His wisdom. Paul echoed this thought – "The natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned" (I Cor. 2:14). God's wisdom is stored up for the upright – the "saints." That's why there is such a mess in our nation's capitol. They operate only according to the thoughts of the natural man. They are ignorant of God's view of righteousness, justice and equity. God, help us!

Today's Thought: Understanding "every good path" comes only by revelation from God.

Have a "revelation" day. Love you.

Dad's Ramblings -- The Treasure Hunt

"My son, if you
          Receive...
          Treasure...
          Incline your ear...
          Apply your heart...
          Cry out for...
          Lift up your voice for...
          Seek... and
          Search for her as hidden treasures;
Then you will understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God."

                                             Proverbs 2:1-5

Wisdom does "not just happen" by osmosis. I know people who, after 70 years of living, still live as fools. It seems that experience has taught them nothing. No. It is the result of purposeful desire and seeking for it as one would for a valuable treasure. Knowing God's wisdom is a worthy pursuit.

Today's Thought: Wisdom is acquired by actively desiring it.

Have a "treasure" day. Love you.

Dad's Ramblings -- Safe and Secure

"But whoever listens to me will dwell safely, and will be secure [margin: at ease] without fear of evil."

                                      Proverbs 1:33

It is horrible to live in fear of the evil around us. The wise and godly person lives in safety, because he doesn't have to worry about hidden sin being discovered and exposed. Nor does he worry about the evil around him because he is secure in the confidence that God will take care of him.

Today's Thought: The wise person lives safe and secure, at ease in God's care.

Have a safe and secure day. Love you.

Dad's Ramblings -- Check the Fruit

"Because I have called and you refused...Because you disdained all my counsel...I also will laugh at your calamity....Then they will call on me, but I will not answer....Because they hated knowledge and did not choose the fear of the LORD....Therefore they shall eat the fruit of their own way...."

                                 Proverbs 1:24a, 25a, 26a, 28, 31a

The fruit of disregarding God's way is rotten and bitter indeed. A wise person looks at the fruit – the consequences – of rejecting God's counsel and chooses the fruit of godly living.

Today's Thought: The fruit of sin is bitter.

Have a fruit-checking day. Love you.

Dad's Ramblings -- Wisdom Around Us

"Wisdom calls aloud outside; she raises her voice in the open square....'How long, you simple ones, will you love simplicity? For scorners delight in their scorning, and fools hate knowledge. Turn at my rebuke; surely I will pour out my spirit on you; I will make my words known to you.' "

                                         Proverbs 1:20, 22-23

Wisdom is revealed all around us in what is called Natural Law. Common sense tells us certain things are true. But fools reject common sense and substitute such foolishness as Political Correctness. Common sense becomes the object of scorn and ridicule by the fool as he walks deeper into the darkness of his own imaginations. To the one who listens to Natural Law, the light shines and he receives even more wisdom.

Today's Thought: Common sense is ridiculed by the fool.

Have a common sense day. Love you.

Dad's Ramblings -- The Power of Greed

"So are the ways of everyone who is greedy for gain; it takes away the life of its owner."

                                          Proverbs 1:19

Greed is powerful and destructive. When a person is controlled by lust for material things, he will do most anything to satisfy those desires – including stealing and murder (vss. 11- 16). But in the end, he becomes the victim of his own devices. He spreads the trap for others and ends up being caught himself (vss. 17-18). Even if he himself isn't murdered, the lust for money, power, and fame so controls him that he loses the essence of life. He can't really enjoy life because of the consuming desire for more. Beware of greed.

Today's Thought: Greed is powerful and destructive, and takes away the joy of living.

Have a contented day. Love you.

Dad's Ramblings -- The Hook!

"My son, if sinners entice you, do not consent...My son, do not walk in the way with them. Keep your foot from their path."

                                                     Proverbs 1:10, 15

To entice the fish, a fisherman does not just throw a bare hook into the water. He covers the hook with bait to lure the fish. The fish does not see the hook, but by the time he swallows the bait, it is too late. When the ungodly say, "Just a little bit won't hurt you," look out for the hidden hook. It is easier to abstain from evil – to walk away from it – than to get the hook out of your mouth. "Blessed in the man who does not walk in the counsel of the ungodly" (Psalm 1:1).

Today's Thought: Sin may look enticing, but it has an unseen hook.

Have a godly day. Love you.

Dad's Ramblings -- Bondage or Beauty?

"My son, hear the instruction of your father, and do not forsake the law of your mother; for they will be a graceful ornament on your head, and chains about your neck."

                                           Proverbs 1:8-9

When I was young, the "chains about your neck" seemed like chains of bondage rather than a beautiful necklace. The wisdom of Mom and Dad's counsel – "Do this; Don't do that" – come from experience and are meant to keep a young person from the mistakes of the parents. Godly rules add beauty to a life. Forsaking them only brings the ugliness of pain and heartache.

Today's Thought: Listening to the instruction of older people is graceful jewelry that adorns the life of the wise.

Have a beautiful day. Love you.

Dad's Ramblings -- Fear of the LORD

"The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction."

                                           Proverbs 1:7

"Don't tell me what to do!" is the motto of youth. "I did it my way" is the mantra of older people. People don't want God because that means they will have to live by God's standards. Rejecting the laws of the God of the Universe and Creator of mankind leads to grave consequences (or consequences after the grave). Only fools do not fear God.

Today's Thought: Wisdom is demonstrated by heeding God's instruction in the fear of the Lord.

Have a "fearing" day. Love you.

Dad's Ramblings -- Listening to Counsel

"A wise man will hear and increase in learning, and a man of understanding will attain wise counsel, to understand a proverb, the words of the wise and their riddles."

                                           Proverbs 1:5-6

The male gender is notorious for not asking directions, even when lost. We don't want to appear stupid and injure our fragile egos by admitting we don't know. It is a wise man who recognizes that he needs help. I laid awake for an hour from 3:00 to 4:00 remembering how I should have listened more when raising my kids. Life can be an enigma and a riddle, but there is help available if we will listen to people who have been through it before.

Today's Thought: In the maze of life, it is better to ask directions than to wander in circles.

Have a listening day. Love you.

Dad's Ramblings -- Shortcuts

"To give...to the young man discretion."

                                            Proverbs 1:4b

The English meaning of discretion is the ability to make responsible decisions. The Hebrew word carries with it the thought of having a plan or a purpose – knowing where you want to go and the best way to get there. If I want to go to New York City, I look at a map to set out my plan. The shortest route is not always the best. I have taken shortcuts that took me over rough road and ended in a dead-end. I ended up retracing my steps and starting over. In life, I want quick fixes. Wisdom does not look for shortcuts. It knows the best way to get there from here, even if it takes longer.

Today's Thought: Shortcuts are not always the best way to go.

Have a "discretionary" day. Love you.

Dad's Ramblings -- Prudent Wisdom

"To give prudence to the simple...."

                                             Proverbs 1:4

What does it mean to be prudent? In the Hebrew, it means craftiness or guile (by trickery) or shrewdness in a good sense. Webster's Dictionary says it is being "foresighted; shrewd in the management of practical affairs." It is foresighted in that it looks to the future, and does not just respond to the immediate. Or as my son-in-law, Ted, would put it, it sees the result one wants and makes choices to achieve the desired result. The wise steward looks forward to his Master's return and orders his life accordingly (Luke 12:35-48). Shrewdness is being able to discern the best way to achieve the results. Perhaps this is what Jesus meant when He told His disciples, "Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore, be wise as serpents and harmless as doves" (Matthew 10:16). The prudent person understands how crafty the wolves and snakes of this world are so he can respond wisely.  But he does not act like wolves and snakes; the godly person is guileless and harmless as sheep and doves. He is as shrewd as a wolf, but remains as pure as a sheep in his motives and actions.

Today's Thought: The prudent person is foresighted and shrewd in his decisions.

Have a prudent day. Love you.

Dad's Rambling -- Level Wisdom

"To receive the instruction of .... equity..."

                                             Proverbs 1:3

Another foundation stone of wisdom is equity – that is, straightforward, sincere, and level. We use the phrase, "on the level," when referring to someone who speaks the truth without shading it to fit the person, the circumstance, or some agenda. If I am using a level to construct a building, I want the bubble to be true and dependable so my building will be in proper alignment. When I receive counsel, instruction or information, I want it to be the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. Sometimes people bend the truth to make it more palatable, but it is a disservice to the hearer. May my words be on the straight and level.

Today's Thought: Wisdom will always be straight, level, sincere and true.

Have an equitable day. Love you.

Dad's Ramblings -- Wisdom and Justice

"To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice.........."

                                             Proverbs 1:3

One of the foundation stones of wisdom is justice – the act of deciding what is right, proper, and fitting in the light of the way things ought to be. Too often my decisions are made on the basis of what I want rather than what is best. A decision based on anything other than what is right and proper is quicksand that will swallow me up. Decisions based on justice will stand the test of time.

Today's Thought: Wisdom makes decisions based on what is right rather than personal desire.

Have a Just day. Love you.

Dad's Ramblings -- Choices and Decisions

"The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel:
        To know wisdom and instruction,
To perceive the words of understanding,
        To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, judgment, and equity;
To give prudence to the simple,
to the young man knowledge and discretion."

                                             Proverbs 1:1

Life is filled with choices and decisions. The choices we make today will affect us tomorrow. Fools pay no heed to the future, but live only for the present. The wise look at the end result and act according to what is best for tomorrow. To make wise choices, we need to base them on eternal principles greater than today's feelings. The ingredients of wisdom are Justice, Judgment, Equity, Prudence, and Discretion. May these five foundation stones become a part of our lives.

Today's Thought: Today's choices are tomorrow's life.

Have a wise day. Love you.

Dad's Ramblings -- Worship, Praise, and Joy

"And they worshiped Him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy, and were continually in the temple praising and blessing God. Amen."

                                            Luke 24:52-53

The earthly life of Jesus began with worship, praise and joy as the wise men and shepherds recognized the hand of God in what they had witnessed, and ended with the disciples worshiping and praising God with joy. We, 2000 years removed, are also people of worship, praise and joy because of the birth, death, resurrection and ascension of the living Christ. Hallelujah!!

Today's Thought: Those who recognize God's work are filled with worship, praise, and
joy.

Have a joyful day of worship and praise. Love you.

Dad's Ramblings -- The Ascension

"And He led them out as far as Bethany, and He lifted up his hands and blessed them. Now it came to pass, while He blessed them, that He was parted from them and carried up into heaven."

                                              Luke 24:50

Is the Ascension of Jesus into heaven important for our faith? Suppose that Jesus had not ascended and that He was still confined to roam the earth in His glorified body. How would that affect our lives? For one thing, we would not have the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit. Jesus Himself said, "It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you" (John 16:7). For another thing, we would have no assurance that we would go to heaven when we die. It was vitally important that Jesus return to His rightful position of authority in heaven at the right hand of the Father. Indeed, the Ascension is a vital part of our faith.

Today's Thought: The Ascension of Jesus is an essential element of our faith.

Have a rejoicing day. Love you.

Dad's Ramblings -- The Promise of the Father

" 'Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high.' "

                                               Luke 24:49

The disciples were given a job to do, and Jesus promised power to do that job. The Promise of the Father is the Baptism with the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:4-8). They were not to just rush into the battle but were told to wait until they received this Baptism of power. This was an eduement that came after salvation. They had already received the Holy Spirit when Jesus breathed on them (John 20:22), just as every born-again Believer receives the Holy Spirit when they are saved. This was a different realm of power that Jesus promised. Can you imagine people enlisting in the army and then going into war without any training? Without any guns and ammunition? Without any air-power supporting them? Yet many Believers have joined the army but spurn the power to do battle – help that God has promised. How foolish to go to war without His power.

Today's Thought: The Baptism with the Holy Spirit is for power to do the job God has given us to do.

Have a "power" day. Love you.

Dad's Ramblings -- Pay It Forward

"Then He said to them, 'Thus It is written and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer, and rise from the dead the third day, and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all the nations, beginning at Jerusalem. And you are witnesses of these things.' "

                                            Luke 24:46-48

A local television station has a program called "Pay It Forward," in which $500 is given to one person, and which he in turn must give to someone else. The disciples – and all believers – are entrusted with the Gospel that Jesus died and rose again for our salvation. This wonderful treasure is given to us, not to be hoarded to ourselves. He wants us to "pay it forward."

Today's Thought: The Gospel is given not just to bless us but to bless the nations,
beginning at our Jerusalem.

Have a "pay it forward" day. Love you.

Dad's Ramblings -- Repeat Performance

"Then He said to them, 'These are the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning me.' And He opened their understanding, that they might comprehend the Scriptures."

                                                Luke 24:44-45

This is a repeat performance. He had told them for the three years they were together that He must fulfill the Scriptures. And just a few hours earlier He had taught the two disciples from the Scriptures concerning Himself (vs. 27). Now He is teaching them again from the Scriptures. A person can listen to a preacher expound the Word of God for years and still not understand the Gospel. One can study and memorize the Scripture for decades and still not comprehend (as many do with the Baptism in the Holy Spirit). There are two ingredients – the Holy Spirit leading into truth (John 16:13) and a willing heart to receive. But if we have an open heart to hear, God will open our understanding. After 60 years, I am still learning God's truth daily.

Today's Thought: God will teach an open heart, even if it takes years.

Have a open-hearted day to hear God's Word. Love you.

Dad's Ramblings -- The Resurrection Body

"When He said this ["Peace"], He showed them His hands and His feet. But while they still did not believe for joy, and marveled, He said to them, 'Have you any food here?' So they gave Him a piece of broiled fish and some honeycomb. And He took it and ate in their presence."

                                              Luke 24:40-43

Jesus gave us a glimpse of what our resurrected bodies will be like – physical, yet immaterial. John said that we shall be like Him (I John 3:2). Does this mean I will get to eat in heaven? I sure hope so, because I enjoy it so much here. I'm sure whatever food I eat will be low-fat, low calorie (broiled fish and honeycomb? -- yummy!). In heaven, I won't have to worry about getting fat. As the old song goes, "No more dieting (or is it dying) there – We are going to see the King."

Today's Thought: Our resurrected bodies will be like Jesus.

Have a low-calorie, low-fat day. Love you.

Dad's Ramblings -- Peace in Terror

"Now as they said these things, Jesus Himself stood in the midst of them, and said to them, 'Peace to you.' But they were terrified and frightened, and supposed they had seen a spirit. And He said to them, 'Why are you troubled? And why do doubts arise in your hearts?' "

                                        Luke 24:36-38

These are good questions. The answer, I think, is not knowing all the facts. I have experienced just a few times in my life this type of fright that goes beyond fear to terror. One time was when as a child I came home expecting all the family to be there. They were gone and I thought I had missed the Rapture. The mind freezes, the body is paralyzed, there is a huge rock in the pit of the stomach, and one imagines the worst – just like the disciples. Remember, this is the evening of the first day of Jesus' resurrection. Even though they had heard reports that He was alive, they did not really understand what was happening. So when Jesus actually stood in their midst, they were scared spitless. But Jesus speaks "Peace" and reveals Himself in those terrifying times.

Today's Thought: Jesus speaks peace into our frightening and terror-filled days.

Are you troubled today?  Have a peaceful day in Jesus' presence. Love you.

Dad's Ramblings -- It's Testimony Time!

"So they rose up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven and those who were with them gathered together, saying, 'The Lord is risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon!' And they told about the things that had happened on the road, and how He was known to them in the breaking of bread."

Luke 24:33-35

It's testimony time!!! I do miss the old-fashioned worship services that included testimonies from the congregation. When God reveals Himself in some special way, we need to tell someone. It not only encourages and strengthens other peoples' faith, it also confirms in our own hearts that Jesus is alive.

Today's Thought: We need to tell someone how God has ministered to us.

Have a testimony day. Love you.

Dad's Rambings -- The Burning Heart

"And they said to one another, 'Did not our hearts burn within us while He talked with us on the road, and while He opened the Scriptures to us?' "

                                                  Luke 24:32

I remember the excitement I felt in my spirit when I was in my twenties as God began to make the Bible come alive to me. And still my heart burns within me each morning fifty years later as I open the Word and Jesus illuminates a truth. I exclaim with the Psalmist, "Oh, how I love Your law!" (Psalm 119:97)

Today's Thought: The truth of God's Word warms the heart.

Have a burning day. Love you.

Dad's Ramblings -- Known By Prayer

"Now it came to pass, as He sat at the table with them, that He took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they knew Him, and He vanished from their sight."

                                              Luke 24:30-31

The year was 1985. Mildred and I had just enjoyed a vacation to the Midwest after resigning from the pastoral staff of a church. The first Sunday back, we returned to the church where we had ministered. The new pastor invited me to participate in the service. As I sat on the platform waiting for my time, people in the congregation did not recognize me because, while on vacation, I had acquired a hairpiece to cover my bald head. Some thought I was there to give a Gideon presentation. When it was my turn, the pastor asked me to pray. As I began to pray, I heard a buzz in the audience. I listened more closely, and I heard people saying, "It's John! It's John!" They recognized me as I prayed. The disciples had heard Jesus pray many times, and as He blessed the food, their eyes were opened to recognize Him. Oh, that people would know me by my prayers.

Today's Thought: People can know us by our prayers.

Have a prayerful day. Love you.

Dad's Ramblings -- The Abiding Presence

"Then they drew near to the village where they were going, and He indicated that He would have gone farther. But they constrained Him, saying, 'Abide with us, for it is toward evening and the day is far spent.' And He went in to stay with them."

                                              Luke 24:28-29

Even though Jesus is Lord and King, He does not force Himself on anyone. He abides where is entreated and welcomed. Jesus wants to live in us. He said, "Abide in Me, and I in you" (John 15:4). Dear Jesus, abide with me and in me. I want your presence in my life.

Today's Thought: Jesus abides where He is wanted and welcomed.

Have an abiding day. Love you.

Dad's Ramblings -- An Open Heart

"Then He said to them, 'O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things? And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself."

                                          Luke 24:25-26

How often Jesus must say, "O foolish John! How slow of heart you are to believe." I, like the disciples, see things happen around me in the world (vss. 19b-24) that I don't understand. And I, like the disciples, know the Scriptures.  Yet sometimes I have trouble putting two and two together to understand how it all fits together in God's plan. It takes Jesus to open my heart to understand God's Word. Lord, help me understand all You have written.

Today's Thought: Jesus opens our hearts to understand the Scriptures.

Have an open-hearted day. Love you.

What????

What???

I need to correct a typo on the Dad's Ramblings for 10/26/09.  Instead of "Inquiring minds what to know," it should read "Inquiring minds want to know."  I guess this is to keep me humble because I am quick to point out proofreading errors in other peoples' writings.

Actually, I questioned my choice of application of the text when I wrote it.  Questions?  Why write about questions?  But it seemed the Lord confirmed this choice because as I was doing my morning walk, I listened to a podcast by a preacher who, in his message, said that in the red letters of the Gospels, there are 150 questions, and in the book of Mark alone there are 50 instances of dialogues with people using 60 questions asked by Jesus.  Of all the days I could have listened to this podcast, it was today.  So I think the Lord had a purpose.

Love, Dad

Windows 7: I wanted more reliable, now it's more reliable. Wow!

Dad's Ramblings -- Leading Questions

"And He said to them, 'What kind of conversation is that you have with one another as you walk and are sad?' Then the one whose name was Cleopas answered and said to Him, 'Are You the only stranger in Jerusalem, and have You not known the things which happened there in these days?' And He said to them, 'What things?' "

                                               Luke 24:17-19a

Inquiring minds what to know!!! Actually, Jesus didn't have to ask; He already knew. In reviewing Jesus' teachings in Luke (the red letters), I was impressed by how many times in His teachings He asked a leading question in order to engage the listener. Instead of just laying on a heavy truth, He would get into the listener's mind by asking a question. That's a technique I need to develop. So, what do you think?

Today's Thought: Instead of just speaking truth, it is better to engage the person by asking a question and listening to the response.

Have a questioning day. Love you.

Dad's Ramblings -- Clouded Vision

"But their eyes were restrained, so that they did not know Him."

                                             Luke 24:16

Scripture does not explain why they did not recognize Jesus – whether God kept them from knowing Him, or whether their vision was so clouded by their own circumstances that they couldn't see past their grief. I do know that the stress of my circumstances keeps me from seeing clearly. I get so inundated by my own problems, sorrow, and pain that I don't recognize the presence of Jesus. But He is there even when I don't realize it. May I see Jesus even in my own personal turmoil.

Today's Thought: Jesus is present even when we don't sense Him.

Have an aware day. Love you.

Dad's Ramblings -- A Reasonable Faith

"Now behold, two of them were traveling that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was seven miles from Jerusalem. And they talked together of all these things which had happened. So it was, while they conversed and reasoned, that Jesus Himself drew near and went with them."

                                      Luke 24:13-15

These two disciples were trying to make sense of the events of the past few days – the Lord's death and now His resurrection. The word "reason" means to question, examine and discuss. This involves the mental faculties God has given us. God is not against a reasonable faith. In fact, Jesus joined the discussion. I believe it is important for believers to think through the issues of faith to understand why they believe. This brings a strong, settled faith. We need to search the scriptures, just as the Bereans did, to see if what we believe is true (Acts 17:11), so that we have an answer for the hope that lies within us (I Peter 3:15).

Today's Thought: A reasonable faith produces a strong faith.

Have a reasonable day. Love you.

Dad's Ramblings -- Worshiping Jesus

"But Peter arose and ran to the tomb; and stooping down, he saw the linen cloths lying by themselves; and he departed, marveling to himself at what had happened."

                                                  Luke 24:12

Peter went to the empty tomb to see for himself the miracle. But he didn't stay there; he departed. He did not make a shrine or even worship there. He did not build his life around the site of the miracle. In fact, there is no indication from Scripture or history that the tomb ever became a tourist attraction. As a child I visited Angeles Temple in Los Angeles where Amy Semple McPherson preached and where God did mighty miracles. I remember it as a museum dedicated to the memory of Amy. Scripture encourages memorials to remember His mighty visitations, but not shrines to worship at. We do not have to make pilgrimages to holy places to worship Jesus. He is present in our everyday lives.

Today's Thought: We worship the Person, not the place.

Have a worshiping day. Love you.

Dad's Ramblings -- Growing Faith

"Then they returned from the tomb and told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest...And their words seemed to them like idle tales, and they did not believe them."

                                             Luke 24:9, 11

What great men of faith!!! Jesus had told them over and over again that He would be crucified and rise again. But when it really happened, they didn't believe it. It sounded like a fairy tale. The rest of the chapter is the record of Jesus revealing Himself to His followers. Coming to faith in Jesus is usually a process. There may be a big "event" that brings Him into focus, but there are usually less dramatic seeds that are planted along the way that we understand only after the "event." And even though I am "slow of heart to believe" (see vs. 25), still God is patiently working with me to grow my faith.

Today's Thought: Faith is a growing process that often only comes into focus after an "event."

Have an event-filled day. Love you.

Dad's Ramblings -- Remember His Words

" [The angel said] 'Remember how He spoke to you when He was still in Galilee, saying, "The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again." ' And they remembered His words."

                                                  Luke 24:6b-8

In the middle of their grief, the disciples forgot Jesus' promises. It took an angel to remind them. Sometimes when I am going through the dark places, I forget God's promises. And then a preacher, a friend, or a song reminds me of God's faithfulness to His promises. How wonderful to "remember His words again."

Today's Thought: Remember God is faithful to His word.

Have a remembering day. Love you.

Dad's Ramblings -- Looking For Jesus

"Then, as they were afraid and bowed their faces to the earth, they [the angels] said to them, 'Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here, but is risen!' "

                                                 Luke 24:5-6a

If you want to find Jesus, you have too look in the right place. Get out of the graveyard! He will not be found in formalism or dead ritual, or dead philosophy, or dead intellectualism. He is found where there is LIFE! Go where the Spirit of the Lord is evident, because "the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life" (II Cor. 3:6).

Today's Thought: Jesus can be found where there is life.

Have a lively day. Love you.

Dad's Ramblings -- God's Brightness

"And it happened, as they were greatly perplexed about this, that behold, two men stood by them in shining garments."

                                         Luke 24:4-5

Imagine the glory of those angels in their shining garments. It must have been breathtaking. But it must be normal for heaven. When Jesus was transfigured, his clothes became "white as light" (Matt. 17:2). In Heaven, God will provide the light so that there is no night (Rev. 22:5). And we know that the saints are glorious – spotless – clothed with white robes (Eph. 5:27; Rev. 7:9) because we have been brought out of darkness into His marvelous light (I Peter 2:9). All of this points to the God who IS light, and in Him is no darkness (I John 2:5). No wonder I love Arizona because there is so much sunshine. I'm just getting ready for Heaven.

Today's Thought: God is light and He brings light wherever He is.

Have a shining day. Love you.

Dad's Ramblings -- Surprise!!

"Now on the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they, and certain other women with them, came to the tomb bringing the spices which they had prepared. But they found the stone rolled away from the tomb. Then they went in and did not find the body of the Lord Jesus."

                                            Luke 24:1-3

Surprise!!! These women were expecting and were prepared for one thing, but found another. How often I expect life to happen one way and it turns out differently than I expected.  Miracles are God's surprises – when I expect the natural and God does the supernatural.

Today's Thought: God surprises His children with miracles.

Have a "surprise" day. Love you.

Dad's Ramblings -- Sunday's Comin'

"That day was the Preparation, and the Sabbath drew near. And the women who had come with Him from Galilee followed after, and the observed the tomb and how the body was laid. Then they returned and prepared spices and fragrant oils. And they rested on the Sabbath according to the commandment."

                                                Luke 23:54-56

Just because a person's hopes and dreams seem dead and buried does not meant it is the end of the story. It's Friday but Sunday's comin'.

Today's Thought: The death of a vision (a la Bill Gothard) does not mean it's the end.

Have a hopeful day. Love you.

Dad's Ramblings -- Out Of The Closet

"Now behold, there was a man named Joseph, a council member, a good and just man. He had not consented to their decision and deed. He was from Arimathea, a city of the Jews, who himself was waiting for the kingdom of God. This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then he took it down, wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a tomb that was hewn out of the rock, where no one had ever laid before."

                                             Luke 23:50-53

In his Gospel, John adds the fact that Joseph was a secret believer who was joined by Nicodemus, the same one Jesus had told "you must be born again" (See John 19:38-39). These two were Jewish leaders who kept their faith to themselves because of fear of peer pressure. It took Jesus' death to bring them "out of the closet." When push comes to shove, we can either make our faith public or we can go deeper into the closet. I admire Joseph and Nicodemus because they took a stand in the face of rejection and peril to their own lives.

Today's Thought: There comes a time when each of us must decide to confess our faith publicly.

Have an "out of the closet" day.  Love you.

Dad's Ramblings -- Looking At The Cross

"And the whole crowd who came together to that sight, seeing what had been done, beat their breasts and returned. But all His acquaintances, and the women who followed Him from Galilee, stood at a distance, watching these things."

                                                 Luke 23:48-49

Here's the difference: Some people see the cross and, even though they might feel a tinge of sorrow, turn away to return to life as usual. Others see the cross and continue to look at it. In Wednesday night Bible study, the teacher spoke on keeping our eyes on the cross. May the cross always be the central focus of my life.

             Mercy there was great and grace was free;
             Pardon there was multiplied to me;
There my burdened soul found liberty –
             At Calvary.

Today's Thought: The Cross is the focal point of true faith.

Have a focused day. Love you.

Dad's Ramblings -- The Death of the Righteous

"So when the centurion saw what had happened, he glorified God, saying, 'Certainly this was a righteous man.' "

                                            Luke 23:47

This soldier had doubtless seen many crucifixions. As an executioner, he had become hardened to the cursing and the names he was called by men facing death. But this One was different. This Man simply released His spirit to God without rancor. The life – and death – of the righteous person is different. The righteous can be identified by the way they handle adversity.

Today's Thought: The life and death of the righteous person brings glory to God.

Have a righteous day. Love you.

Dad's Ramblings -- The Committed Spirit

"And when Jesus had cried out with a loud voice, He said, 'Father, into Your hands I commit My spirit.' Having said this, He breathed His last."

                                                Luke 23:46

What did Jesus cry out with a loud voice? Perhaps it was what John recorded: "It is finished" (John 19:30). Jesus had done all that the Father sent Him to do to secure our salvation. Now He could rest in death. Jesus echoed the words of David, where, in the midst of his own trials, he found the place of safety – "my rock and my fortress" – and said, "Into Your hand I commit my spirit" (Psalm 31:3-5). There is a place of rest in the time of trial when the spirit is committed to God.

Today's Thought: We can rest securely in God's hand when we commit ourselves to Him.

Have a committed day. Love you.

Dad's Ramblings -- The Torn Veil

"Then the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was torn in two."

                                     Luke 23:45

The veil is for hiding something. Women wear veils or burkas to hide their faces. The veil in he Old Testament tabernacle was to keep people from the ark where the presence of God resided. Only Aaron (or the high priest) was allowed behind the veil, and even he could not come "at just any time" (Leviticus 16:2). He could only enter behind the veil once a year to make atonement for the sins of the people (Leviticus 16:15). This reference to the torn veil is extremely significant because it means that there is nothing separating us from God's presence. Atonement has been made by Jesus' sacrifice and we can now enter into the presence of God (Hebrews 4:16; 6:19-20). The veil that separated us from God has been removed; atonement has been made for sin once and for all.

Today's Thought: We can enter into God's presence because of the sacrifice of Jesus.

Enjoy God's presence today. Have a good day.

Dad's Ramblings -- Darkness That Can Be Felt

"Now it was about the sixth hour [noon], and there was darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour [3 o'clock]."

                                                 Luke 23:44

This kind of darkness happened once before. It was the ninth plague on Egypt, and there was darkness for three days – darkness that, according to Scripture, could be felt. It was so dark that they could not see one another, except in the homes of the children of Israel. (See Exodus 10:21-23.) Darkness is very oppressive. When I was a kid, I delivered newspapers very early in the morning (5:00 AM). If there was no moon and it was overcast, it was so dark I could not see the paper boxes. I hated those kind of mornings. I felt so alone out there pedaling my bike. It was scarey. I can imagine the loneliness and apprehension the people must have felt when God said to the sun, "Don't shine." But it is a picture of people living for years in darkness without the light of the Son in loneliness, fear, anxiety, and oppression – darkness that can be felt. That's why the light of the Gospel is so freeing to the spirit.

Today's Thought: Living in darkness produces loneliness, anxiety and fear.

Have an "enlightened" day. Love you.

Dad's Ramblings -- It's Never Too Late

"Then he said to Jesus, 'Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom.' And Jesus said to him, 'Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.' "

                                             Luke 23:42-43

No sin is too great and it's never too late for the repentant soul to be saved and go to heaven. Oh, what marvelous grace!

Today's Thought: It's never too late to be saved.

Have a rejoicing day. Love you.

Dad's Ramblings -- God-Consciousness

"Then one of the criminals who were hanged blasphemed Him, saying, 'If You are the Christ, save Yourself and us.' But the other, answering, rebuked Him saying, 'Do you not even fear God, seeing you are under the same condemnation? And we justly, for we receive the due reward of our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.' "

                                       Luke 23:39-41

The presence of God-consciousness is something I don't understand. Why do some people have an awareness of God and others do not? I guess it is not for me to understand. But I know it is true. These two criminals are a picture of humanity. Some people have hard hearts toward God and curse Him to their grave, while others have a soft heart and acknowledge they are sinners before a righteous God. Though it is not an answer, the key is the "fear of God." The Psalmist wrote: "An oracle within me heart concerning the transgression of the wicked: There is no fear of God before his eyes" (Psalm 36:1). I believe the most common admonition in the Bible is "Fear God." There is no true repentance without fear of God. Recognizing that we will answer to a righteous judge brings us to repentance. Lord, let me have a soft heart that responds to You.

Today's Thought: Fear of God leads to repentance.

Have a "God-conscious" day. Love you.

Dad's Ramblings -- Titles of Honor

"And an inscription also was written over Him in letters of Greek, Latin, and Hebrew:
THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS."

                                              Luke 23:38

Pilate had ordered the sign which was a public posting of Jesus' "crime." It may have been meant as ridicule. After all, what king would reign from a cross naked, bloody, and black and blue? But the accusation was indeed the truth. Jesus was and is King. Throughout history, followers of Jesus have been called names. The early disciples were first called Christian in Antioch (Acts 11:26). It was meant as derision, but it was true. They were Christ's people. What names might I bear as a follower of Christ? Fool? Fanatic? Nut? So be it. It's true!! I confess, I am!!!

Today's Thought: Names meant as ridicule can become badges of honor.

Have an honorable day. Love you.

Dad's Ramblings -- The Easy Way Out

"And the people stood looking on. But even the rulers with them sneered, saying, 'He saved others; let Him save Himself if He is the Christ, the chosen of God.' The soldiers also mocked Him...saying, 'If You are the King of the Jews, save Yourself.' "

                                              Luke 23:35-37

The fact is, Jesus, the Creator of the Universe, could have saved Himself just by speaking a word. Remember when He was arrested, the soldiers all fell to the ground when He simply said, "I am" (John 18:6). Or He could have called 12 legions of angels to His rescue (Matthew 26:53). Just by one word, He could have annihilated the whole bunch of them. That would have been the easy way out. But it would have bypassed the Father's greater plan – our salvation. I am always looking for the easy way out, and in the process miss what God really wants to accomplish in me and through me. It takes a lot of grace to endure suffering when I could take the easy way out.

Today's Thought: The easy way is not always God's way.

Have an enduring day. Love you.

Dad's Ramblings -- Forgiveness

"Then Jesus said, 'Father, forgive them for they know not what they do.' "

                                            Luke 23:34

When Jesus said these words, there was no ulterior motive. The very heart of Jesus was unfeigned forgiveness. The natural human response to misuse and abuse is to hold the offender hostage in the prison of our hearts with chains of bitterness, anger, grudge, and a "get-even" attitude. But not Jesus. His was pure forgiveness with no strings attached. It is one thing to speak forgiveness; it is another thing to release the offender. The Scriptures say that there was no guile in His mouth (Isaiah 53:9; I Peter 2:22). The Greek word has the sense of catching with bait, to lure, snare and hence to speak deceptively. Peter brings this point home when He wrote,

"Who committed no sin, nor was deceit found in His mouth; who, when He was reviled, did not revile in return; when He suffered, He did not threaten ["I'll get even with you; you'll pay for this"], but committed Himself to Him who judges righteously" (I Peter 2:23).

This is the key to releasing offense – giving ourselves (and the offense) to God. That's what Jesus did, and He is our example (I Peter 2:21).

Today's Thought: Giving offenses to God is the key to living without bitterness.

Have a "free" day. Love you.

Dad's Rambling -- Enduring Shame

"There were also two others, criminals, led with Him to be put to death. And when they had come to the place called Calvary, there they crucified Him, and the criminals, one on the right hand and the other on the left."

                                            Luke 23:32-33

We hear a lot about "death with dignity." But Jesus' death was ignominious – characterized by disgrace or shame, dishonorable, humiliating, degrading (Webster). No only was he beaten, stripped naked, paraded through the streets, and displayed for all to mock and ridicule, but he was counted as a common criminal in fulfillment of the prophecy, "He was numbered with the transgressors" (Isaiah 53:12). No wonder Paul wrote, "He humbled Himself and became obedient unto death, EVEN the death of the cross" (Philippians 2:8) – not just death, but the death of the cross. The cross was reserved for mal-doers. Jesus didn't just die in a quiet, dignified passing. He died a violent, shameful death – the death of the cross – as one being punished for wrongdoing. He "endured the cross, despising the shame" (Hebrews 12:2) – counting it as nothing. Shame on me for getting so concerned about my honor and my good reputation!

Today's Thought: Jesus endured the shame of being executed with criminals as a criminal.

Have a ignominious day for Jesus. Love you.

Dad's Ramblings -- Looking Beyond

"But Jesus, turning to them, said, 'Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for Me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. For indeed the days are coming...' "

                                          Luke 23:28-29a

Beaten and broken, in the midst of His own pain, Jesus looked beyond Himself at the big picture – at the suffering these women would endure in just a few years (vss. 29-31). When I am suffering, it is difficult to turn my eyes beyond my own pain to the needs of others. All I can think about is how much I hurt. Lord, help me to look beyond myself – to not just concentrate on the trees but see the forest.

Today's Thought: Spiritual greatness is looking beyond myself to the needs of others.

Have a "looking beyond" day. Love you.

Dad's Ramblings -- Where Are The Men?

"And a great multitude of the people followed Him, and women who also mourned and lamented Him."

                                             Luke 23:27

So where are the men? It does seem that women are more spiritually sensitive than men. (Eve takes a lot of flack but she was the one who Satan tempted because of her spiritual desire to be godly – albeit in a wrong way.) Only the women had the guts to be counted with Jesus in His passion. Of the eleven disciples, only John is seen at the cross. Thank goodness for spiritual women. But come on, men. Let's not leave it to the women. "Watch, stand fast in the faith, be brave, be strong" (I Cor. 16:13).

Today's Thought: Men should not leave all the spiritual things to the women.

Have a "strong and brave" day. Love you all.

Dad's Rambling -- Carrying The Cross

"Now as they led Him away, they laid hold of a certain man, Simon a Cyrenian, who was coming from the country, and on him they laid the cross that he might bear it after Jesus."

                                               Luke 23:26

Simon was just an observer on the sidelines. He was a foreigner in Jerusalem on other business when he was attracted by the crowd and he went to see what was happening. He wasn't "for" or "against" Jesus. He was just a bystander. But suddenly he was "laid hold of" by the soldiers and became a participant in the drama, carrying Jesus' cross behind Him. There are scads of people who stand on the sidelines in the crowd. They are not against Jesus but not really committed to following Him either. They really don't want to be identified too closely with Jesus. But Jesus said that there is a cross to bear in order to follow Him (Matthew 16:24; Mark 3:34, 10:27; Luke 9:23, 14:27). This is a figurative cross but it can be just as heavy as the literal one Simon bore. I am "laid hold of" to carry a cross.

Today's Thought: We are called to get off the sidelines and carry the cross.

Have a "carrying" day. Love you.

Dad's Ramblings -- The Big Choice

"And he released to them the one they requested, who for rebellion and murder had been thrown into prison; but he delivered Jesus to their will."

                                               Luke 23:25

This is an illustration of the human condition under the control of Satan. "The carnal mind is enmity against God" –so says Romans 8:7. People do not want Jesus because they don't want righteousness. They would rather crucify the righteous than admit to their own sin.   But, as the old song goes, "I'd rather have Jesus." What a wonderful Savior!

Today's Thought: The sinful mind chooses sin over righteousness.

Have a righteous day. Love you.

Dad's Ramblings -- One Against the Mob

"Pilate, therefore, wishing to release Jesus, again called out to them.  But they shouted, saying, 'Crucify Him, crucify Him!'  Then he said to them a third time, 'Why?  What evil has He done?  I have found no reason for death in Him.  I will therefore chastise Him and let Him go.'  But they were insistent, demanding with loud voices that He be crucified.  And the voices of these men and of the chief priests prevailed.  So Pilate gave sentence that it should be as they requested."

                                                Luke 23:20-24

There was a T.V. game show called "1 Against 100."  The lone contestant stood against "The Mob," as they were called.  It is hard to stand against the Mob.  Pilate found that true and caved in. The mob mentality does not listen to reason.  Those with the loudest voices control the masses.  I avoid any group that is incited by people yelling into bull-horns or chanting slogans, even if I agree with what they stand for.  The majority is not always right and it is hard to stand alone for truth.

Today's Thought:  The mob does not usually listen to reason.

Have a "stand-alone" day.  Love you.

Dad's Ramblings -- Choosing Evil for Good

"Then Pilate ... said to them... 'Nothing deserving of death has been done by Him.  I will therefore chastise Him and release Him.'  And they all cried out all at once, saying, 'Away with this Man, and release to us Barabbas' -- who had been thrown into prison for a certain rebellion made in the city, and for murder."

                                              Luke 23:13-19

It is a sad day when people choose evil over righteousness.  The Bible speaks of those who call bad "good."  "Woe to those who call evil good and good evil; who put darkness for light, and light for darkness;  who put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter" (Isaiah 50:20).  The majority of American culture calls evil good, rejecting God's righteousness.  We are facing God's woe.  May God help us.

Today's Thought:  Calling evil good will incur God's wrath.

Have a righteous day.   Love you.
