EXPLAINING THE EVIDENCE
Matthew 9:32-34
"As they went out, behold, they bought to Him a man, mute and demon-possessed. And when the demon was cast out, the mute spoke. And the multitudes marveled, saying, 'It was never seen like this in Israel!' But the Pharisees said, 'He casts out demons by the ruler of the demons.' "
What the Pharisees proposed as an explanation of the facts was totally illogical. It makes no sense to say that Satan would cast out his own forces. People who do not want to believe will reject the evidence and make up their own theories. It happens every day in courtrooms across our nation. Perhaps the greatest illustration of this is theories about origins. People who do not want to believe in God the Creator will concoct their own ideas to explain the beginning of the universe that deny and contradict laws of nature that we know are true. Spontaneous generation is not rational because we know that it is impossible for something to come out of nothing. But the human mind will go to great lengths to explain away the evidence for the existence of God, even if it is not rational. The Apostle Paul nailed it on the head when he wrote that they "exchanged the truth of God for the lie" (Romans 1:25). It is easier for me to believe in the miracle of Creation by an all-powerful God than to believe in spontaneous generation.
TODAY'S PRINCIPLE: Rational thinking demands unbiased examination of the evidence.
