THE GLORIOUS GOSPEL
II Corinthians 3:7-9
"But if the ministry of death, written and engraved on stones, was glorious, so that the children of Israel could not look steadily at the face of Moses because of the glory of his countenance, which glory was passing away, how will the ministry of the Spirit not be more glorious? For if the ministry of condemnation had glory, the ministry of righteousness exceeds much more in glory."
Both the Law given to Moses and the Gospel of Jesus have their glory, but the glory of the Gospel is more glorious. The difference? The Law can only condemn me and tell me how I fail to live up to God's standard of righteousness. If does not give the power to live a holy life. It only brings death. But the Gospel brings life because the righteousness of the law is fulfilled in me through my faith in Jesus Christ. Paul explained this concept in his letter to the Romans. "The law of the Spirit of life has made me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law could not do in that it was weak in the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh, that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit" (Romans 8:2-4). I can struggle in my flesh to live a holy life to please God, or I can live in the freedom that faith in Christ brings. We are so very fortunate to have the glorious Gospel of Christ and the Holy Spirit who gives life.
TODAY'S PRINCIPLE: Living according to the rules of the Law brings condemnation and death; living in faith in Christ brings freedom and life.
