TRUSTING IN OURSELVES OR IN GOD
II Corinthians 1:8-9
"For we do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, of our troubles which came to us in Asia; that we were burdened beyond measure, above strength, so that we despaired even of life Yes, we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves but in God who raises from the dead."
We do not face physical death for the sake of our faith as Paul did. Yet, sometimes the troubles of life overwhelm us and bring us to despair. In those times when the burdens seem more than our strength can endure, we can learn to trust in the God of life instead of ourselves – our own strength and abilities. This is the consolation of verses 3-7. As the old gospel song goes, "He is able to deliver me."
TODAY'S PRINCIPLE: The God who raises from the dead gives strength and help when we despair of life.
